Kentucky Derby 2010 Is Coming Up And Mint Julep Recipe
The Kentucky Derby 2010 is almost here, kicking off at 6 in the evening on Saturday, May 1. It will be on NBC. That means the Triple Crown is kicking off at Churchill Downs, and the Preakness and Belmont Stakes are next. Fortunes will soon be won and lost, mint juleps consumed, and quick cash put down on bets.
The Kentucky Derby 2010
The Kentucky Derby 2010 is the start of the Triple Crown. The Kentucky Derby is one of the premier horse racing events in the U.S., and it is an event unto itself, definitely worth getting a payday loan to attend if you don’t have the cash. The Washington Post has put up the odds:
- Lookin’ at Lucky – given 3 -1. Being given the best odds isn’t always a blessing.
- Ice Box – 10 -1
- Noble’s Promise – 12-1
- Super Saver – 15-1
- Line of David – 30 – 1
- Stately Victor – 30 -1
- American Lion – 30 -1
- Dean’s Kitten – 50 – 1
- Make Music for Me – 50 -1

Those are the odds for the 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby 2010, but now for something a little different. (I promise I’m not horsing around.)
Placing a definitely due Bourbon
The official drink of the Kentucky Derby 2010 is the Mint Julep. The Mint Julep traditionally is made with Bourbon Whiskey, a whiskey distinct to Kentucky. Use a designated driver and always drink legally and responsibly. (A sober one.) Here we go:
Making a Mint Julep
You must have:
- Mint leaves, and a sprig of mint for garnish
- Sugar
- Seltzer
- Bourbon
- A Collins, Highball or Old Fashioned type glass
- Ice
- A pestle or similar implement; a wooden spoon can work
Then:
- Place a layer of mint leaves in the bottom of the glass, top with a spoonful of sugar or add sugar later to taste
- Grind the leaves
- Add desired amount of ice, crushed is best
- Add between 2 and 3 fingers of bourbon
- Add the seltzer
- Stir, garnish with mint sprig
- Cheers!
Though I normally don’t advocate making a cocktail out of top shelf bourbons (like a good Scotch, straight or minimal rocks is best), I recommend using a good one, like Woodford Reserve (the brand the Kentucky Derby uses) or Maker’s Mark. My favorite is 1792 Ridgemont Reserve.
