Pink Floyd – Still in a League of Their Own!
Having formed during the 1960′s in England, Pink Floyd soon established a reputation for being the most thought provoking band on the planet, both because of their experimental music, as well as their fantastic live performances. It’s hardly surprising then that they are still considered to be one of the most successful bands of all time, with records sales exceeding 200 million copies. Interestingly enough, approximately 50% of sales have been in the USA, where there merchandise continues to be highly collectable.
Of course it was Syd Barrett who originally headed the band, at least until such time that his somewhat strange behavior caused a rift. Later when David Gilmour joined Floyd, replacing Syd Barrett, it was only a matter of time before there international popularity exploded with the 1973 release of “Dark Side of the Moon” In fact, the single “Money” was so popular, that it resulted in the album “Dark Side of the Moon” reaching Number One status in the US charts, where it remained in the charts for an unbelievable 741 weeks. To date, there have been approximately a quarter of a million copies sold, thus making it one of the greatest selling albums of all times.
Interestingly enough, having first formed in 1964, Pink Floyd is essentially a recreated band, having previously been known as Abdabs, Sigma 6 and also Megadeaths. While their popularity in Britain was already formidable, their American fan base only really started to take off when they toured with Jimi Hendrix. Of course, while their music is absolutely phenomenal, their awe inspiring live performances are largely responsible for their astronomical success.
Pink Floyd’s live shows have long since enthralled audiences, not only because of their music, but also because of their elaborate visual effects. From pyrotechnics to smoke, to psychedelic patterns, audiences find themselves immersed in a musical experience which stimulates all their senses. Likewise, the band also has a well deserved reputation of creating the most unique and most unusual shows by incorporating items such as giant balloons and extravagant laser lighting displays. In fact, their “In the Flesh” tour of 1977 saw them using inflatable “Nuclear Family” balloons of a couple with two kids. Of course, as most will already know, the production that they staged for their album “Another Brick in the Wall” was without question the biggest of them all. In fact, such was the success of “Another Brick in the Wall”, that today; all musicals are measured by comparison.
Undeniably, some of Pink Floyds greatest releases have been “Dark Side of the Moon”, “The Wall”, “Wish You Were Here” and “Ummagumma”. Of course, apart from the many Pink Floyd videos which are available, there is also a wide range of other Pink Floyd merch available, some of which has become highly collectable. In fact, some avid followers have gone as far as creating collections of photos, hats, clothing and even programs from practically all the band’s shows. 2005 was another memorable year for the band when they performed at the Live 8 concert in London. This was also the first time the entire band, including Roger Waters, appear together since 1981. Of course, as could be expected, it was a phenomenal success.
During the time that has passed since their 2005 performance, Pink Floyd has been inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame, over and above the numerous other honors bestowed on them. Unfortunately for their fans, the band has no current plans for any concerts or tours but having said that, one can never be quite sure, what surprises these musical legends may come up with. Of course, even though they’re not currently active, the demand for Pink Floyd merchandise continues to flourish.
