The Rolling Stones Are Still Alive And Well After All These Years
The Rolling Stones are a UK rock band that has existed a long time by any scale, with a career now comprising 50 years. Steadiness and the ability to stay relevant are the most notable of the band’s hallmarks. The same passion that is audible on a Rolling Stones vinyl from early in their career is still apparent today on a current CD release. The group was one element of the British Invasion of the 1960’s, having gotten together at the start of the era. The difference between the Stones and the majority of groups from the British Invasion, though, was that their sound, from the get-go, was heavily laden with blues and R&B. A mixture of rock, jazz, and folk was stylistically what they had landed upon by mid decade. They proceeded to try out psychedelia for the extent of a single release before coming back to a bluesier sound, although this was tinged with more country and pure rock than their original sound.
The blues-country-rock hybrid that the Stones developed in the late ‘60’s carried them for several albums’ worth of music up to the middle of the ‘70’s. By the latter part of that decade, though, new trends had gained a following in popular music and the band appeared in danger of becoming unimportant. The group’s keeping on top of the music scene was just a matter of making use of the new punk, disco, and reggae styles to their convenience and incorporating them into their music.
In the 1980’s, the quintet hit a bump in the road. Lead singer Mick Jagger and rhythm guitar man Keith Richards, the two major players in the group, had a falling out, and both found themselves producing solo records. The band did not actually separate, nevertheless, and the solo efforts turned out to be merely part of a momentary break for them. Their respite from touring which accompanied the solo records concluded suddenly with the beginning of the extensive series of shows they scheduled at the point of their 1989 album Steel Wheels’ launch. The 1990’s and 2000’s saw them put out three more studio discs. The efforts were not big steps forward, but cleverly incorporated modern production elements into the band’s rowdy sound that fans had come to know and appreciate.
People taking out old Stones vinyl albums and giving them a spin on their Rega turntables are hearing a band that, remarkably, is still alive and well all these years later. The Britons have been able to stay basically true to form over time, by no means losing the integral elements that have made them one of a kind. The group has come to be a household name, with tremendous ongoing popularity. At this point, it is very tough to envision the Stones ever disbanding or vanishing; one can exclusively see them being a constant presence.
